Frankenstein and Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde
             In the novels Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the protagonists find themselves isolated; at times from friends and at other times, society. Dr. Henry Jekyll, scientist of the mystical would seclude himself in his cabinet where he could madly experiment with the dual nature of mankind. The monster, hideous and despisable lived in a non-accepting world where he must accept living a life of solitude. Dr. Henry Jekyll isolates himself from his friends and from society so that he may pursue his scientific beliefs, whereas the monster in Frankenstein must face a life of isolation; not by his choice but by society's cruel and discriminatory nature. In each case, man makes the decision weather or not to be isolated. In Dr. Henry Jekyll's case he wishes to be alone and secluded from the world in general. The monster on the other hand wishes to become one with the world but is forced into isolation due to his ugliness and disfigurements. Society then forces him into a world that he alone must face.
             Dr. Jekyll was so engrossed in his experiments that he isolated himself from society and from his Atwo oldest friends@ Utterson and Lanyon. (Stevenson 12) The evil manifestation of Dr. Jekyll=s personality through Mr. Hyde ruled his life and overpowered him and his identity; until the unmitigated evil became dominant. This urge to create a drug to distinctively identify the two personalities of man came from the physician=s belief Athat man is not truly one, but truly two.@ (Stevenson 79) Dr. Jekyll had secluded himself from society and from his friends, would not par-take in social events such as dinners and did not care to walk with his friends. Instead he Aconfined himself to the cabinet over the laboratory, where he would sometimes sleep.@ (Stevenson 45) His friends gave up hope and Alittle by little...the frequency of [Utterson=s] visits@ (Stevenson 45) diminished.
