and Montana utilize hanging as a form of execution. Washington and Montana provide the victim with a choice of lethal injection or hanging. There has not been an official hanging in the United States since James Latham and George York were executed in Kansas on June 22 1965.
             The following is an example of what took place at a hanging. The victim would stand on a trap door, with a noose placed around his neck, with the knot placed tightly behind the left ear. The legs were bound together to prevent kicking; the face covered by a hood, so that witnesses would not see the grimaces, and the hands were tied behind the back. Then the hangman would signal for the trapdoor to be opened so the body would drop. The trapdoor is actually sprung open by cutting a string. Sometimes there are three men in a booth on the platform, each of whom cuts a string at the hangman's signal, only one of which actually springs the trapdoor, similar to the firing squad's "blank round".
