In the book 1984, George Orwell foretold the circumstances thatare today. And when he wrote the bookin 1949, it was believed that 35 years later his fiction would begin to makeour reality.
             Thebook took place in London, England during the year 1984. "Airstrip One" was London's alternatereality in the novel. Winston Smith was the protagonist of the novel throughwhose eyes the reader experiences the nightmarish world that Orwell envisions.
             One of the maincharacters in 1984 was Winston Smith. He was a minor member of the ruling party in near-future London. Winston was a very thin and frail man. He was 39 years old and extremelyintellectual, contemplative, and was very much a defeatist. Winston hated the totalitarian control andenforced repression from his government. He was one to hold on to a revolutionary dream. Winston was extremely pensive and curious,desperate to understand how and why the Party exercised such absolute power inOceania. Besides his thoughtful nature,Winston's main attributes are his rebelliousness and his fatalism. He hated the Party passionately and wantedto test the limits of its power; he committed innumerable crimes throughout thenovel, ranging from writing "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER" in his diary to having an illegallove affair with Julia to getting himself secretly indoctrinated into theanti-Party Brotherhood. The effortWinston puts into his attempt to achieve freedom and independence ultimatelyunderscored the Party's devastating power. The end of the novel revealed Winston's rebellion as playing intoO'Brien's Campaign of physical and psychological torture, transforming Winstoninto a loyal subject of Big Brother.
