Critique -- When $18,000 Feels Luxurious: Jeff Lutz
             The author, Juliet B. Schor, shows that some people are reverting to a more simple life. Although this society has grown technically, socially, and economically, people still are looking for simplicity without. For example, Schor did a study titled "Percentage Indicating Item Is a Necessity". In the study, she found that in 1973, having a second television was only a necessity to 3% of the American population, in 1991, it was 15%, and in 1996, it was 10%. Therefore, the study clearly justified her thoughts: Americans are reverting to a more simple life. They want less, want to live more simply, and want to slow down.
             For example, they are looking for the easy road because people desire less and want things less complicated. People are being more conservative and taking into consideration their future for themselves and their family. It is has been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and people are starting to agree with this motto because they are not concerned anymore about wearing the high price clothes and driving the fancy cars. They are realizing that not driving the top of the line cars, or at least what America defines as the top of the line, does not mean that they cannot be happy and have nice things. They are searching for less and simplicity. It appeared as though Jeff Lutz and his girlfriend had less than the average person who was equivalent to them; however, they showed that people could survive the "American Dream" society without living lavish, but living on the necessities. For example, the author said that Jeff had eclectic furniture, which means he did not have the best, but he had somewhere to sit when he came home other than the floor. He was settling for less so that he could be comfortable.
