Refurbishing older schools

             The refurbishing of older institutes of education is slowing becoming more and more common place. In the Savannah area there are few examples of this phenomenon. The Savannah Arts Academy and Richard Arnold are two major established projects. There are numerous quality materials put into older schools, which newer schools lack. Modern schools are concrete abominations with the architectural value or a ten-year-olds clubhouse. The placements of new schools are now on highways of heavy traffic, so walking to school is obsolete. Historical schools are better than modern schools because they bring better architectural value, better location, and more space.
             Take a glance at the modern marvel displayed in the name of Herschel V. Jenkins. He should be ashamed to have his name placed on such a piece of disgrace. It basically looks like a bucket of children's building blocks spilled on the side of DeRenne Avenue. There is no set structure in new construction; it is like the contractors just guessed were to put things. Also notice how modern schools are so well spaced out, but for what reason. This creates numerous problems. First, it takes up unnecessary space that can be used for more valuable things like trees. Secondly, by having it so spaced out the task of getting to class seems that much harder. If your homeroom is on the opposite end of your first period class you are in for plenty of detentions. Even the newest schools are finding cheaper alternatives to brick. As for the older structures, you see an architectural palace worth being educated in. All older schools are made of pure brick, and are intelligently stacked on top of each other. Sure going up a flight of steps may be a bit of a hassle, but this will also help with the obesity problem in schools.
