The operator tried to take control of the water flow manually but was unsuccessful because even small temperature changes can cause huge surges in power. The operator then turned off the emergency automatic shutdown program because he was afraid that it would force them to abort the test. At 1:23 the remaining turbine was shut down. Then the power in the reactor began to gradually rise and the operator began to start the manual shut down which caused a sharp increase in power. At 1:23:44 am on April 26, 1986 the disaster point, the reactor reached 120 times its normal power. All the fuel in it immediately disintegrated and the steam that was supposed to go through the turbines broke all the pressure tubes and blew off the entire top of the reactor.
