             Throughout history, lies many historical figures that influenced the world in many ways. One of which lies, Joseph Stalin. As a dictator, Stalin worked in mysterious ways. His foreign policy and his terror regime , the Stalinist system, had an impact on Soviet society and politics well beyond the dictator's death of natural causes at age 73 on March 5, 1953.
             Georgian Marxist revolutionary and later virtual dictator of the USSR (1928--53). Born Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili on December 21, 1879, he adopted the name Stalin, which means "Man of Steel," while still a young revolutionary. He studied at Tiflis Orthodox Theological Seminary, from which he was expelled in 1899. While he studied the priesthood, Stalin read forbidden literature, including Karl Marx's Das Kapital, and soon converted to Russian Marxism. Before graduation he quit the seminary to become a full-time revolutionary.
             After joining a Georgian Social Democratic organization 1898,he became active in the revolutionary underground, and was twice exiled to Siberia. Once in 1902 and 1913. Stalin first rose to power in 1922 as secretary general of the Communist Party. He then, got rid of all potential rivals in the party, first by having many of them condemned as deviationists, and later by ordering them executed. Although his hold on absolute power was unchallenged by the early 1930s, Stalin worried about potential conspiracies against him.
             The year 1942 was a year of blood and strength. The man whose name means steel in Russian, meaning tough guy' in english. Who was also time's man of the year in 1942 .
             I think Stalin's historical legacy is overwhelmingly negative. Although his policies changed the USSR from an backwards society into an industrialized nation with a powerful military force, the transformation was accomplished at the cost of millions of lives.
