Mark Twains Racism Dispute

Is the use of the word "Nigger" considered to be racist? Is this day and time it is very racist and against the law to act on it. It Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn there is several comments about racism. In the beginning of the novel, Huck refers to Jim as Mrs. Watson and the Widow's nigger. Throughout the novel Afro-Americans are portrayed as being superstitious, illiterate, childlike, and ignorant.
