To avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, be nothing. J.D. Salinger's extraordinary novel, Catcher in the Rye portrays a sixteen-year-old young man who struggles with personal problems. Holden Caulfield, the main character does not act like an ordinary teenager. Holden goes through many obstacles in his life that make him deal with situations and people in a different way. Holden deals with the death of Allie, Holden's brother; Holden does not communicate with his parents. It seems as though Holden criticizes the tragic things in his life. Because of the great deals of tragedy, Holden becomes critical of the movies and people in general, which better explains why he wants to be the catcher in the rye.
             D.B., Holden's older brother, and Holden are really close. Holden thinks that D.B. is a very interesting writer. D.B. writes poems that Holden reads, and Holden especially likes a poem called "The Secret Goldfish". All of that has changed now, D.B. is a famous producer for Hollywood films. He owns a Jaguar, has an amazing girlfriend, and tons of money. Most people would say D.B. has interesting and exotic lifestyles, but in Holden's eyes D.B. is nothing but a hypocrite. Since D.B. moves to Hollywood and leaves Holden back in New York, Holden feels as though since Allie died and D.B. moved away, Holden lost his only two brothers. The reason Holden criticizes movies and Hollywood is because D.B. produces movies in Hollywood. Even though Holden criticizes Hollywood, he still supports it by going to the movies with his friends and Sally. Although, Holden took Sally to the movies, he criticizes it and mocks the movie the entire time; He tells Sally "There is nothing worse than going to see a movie."
