Clearly you can see that these states are totally against same sex marriages, but you still have those few that feel that same sex couples should not be treated any differently than couples of the opposite sex.
             In Vermont, the debate over same sex marriages is very intense. The Supreme Court ruled that it was unfair to treat same sex couples differently from heterosexual couples (Jordan). I believe this is fair because they are people also, and they should not be judged because of their sexual preference. Utah also passed a ban on gay marriages, while in South Dakota the bill failed to pass and Alaska has a bill pending (Hetter). Although each state has taken a different stand on this issue, they all have become more aware of the effects that this may have on our society if same sex marriages become legal or not.
             In a recent article The Supreme Court of Vermont steps out and says that they will allow same sex civil unions; however, same sex couples will not be entitled to federal benefits as married couples, such as Social Security (Lytle).
