foundational database for his behavioural selection paradigm was the behaviour of animals in the laboratory (Henriques, 2003).
Skinner's support for behaviourism and concept of determinism is deeply imbedded within his writings. He believed that all behaviour and emotion was determined as a result of ones genetics, environment and previous experiences or reinforcements (Monte & Sollod, 2003). He places emphasis on operant conditioning, that being a repeat of a behaviour as a result of the particular behaviour being attached to a specific emotion and being reinforced. This reinforcement can be either positive or negative, when performing behaviour, for example, if eating chocolate creates a pleasurable sensation, one is more likely to associate chocolate with positive emotions and eat chocolate again. In contrast, if a persons first experience with chocolate was unpleasant, they may be less likely to partake in the experience again.
In support for a behavioural point of view, Skinner proposed that anxiety was a result of the nature of reinforcements. If a reinforcement is designed to or accidentally used to stimulated negative emotions as a tool of behaviour reconstruction is used repeatedly, it will be learned by the person as a usual response, which may generate conflict or anxiety when the situation or others similar are present. In order to apply this concept to anxiet
