Salinger Reaserch Paper

             "I write for myself, and I want to be left absolutely alone to do it." So says Jerome David Salinger, residing in Cornish, New Hampshire. He is, quite literally, a man of few words. He's considered a genuine hero, having served for the Army Signal Corps and the Counter Intelligence Corp. In addition, although he is considered a literary hero, he is still a man that is full of mystery and contradictions.
             As for being a man who is overflowing with contradictions, it shows in his every day life. While he says he only eats organic food, when his son is visiting, they both go out for pizza. (Morrill) He fills his days up, searching in his Buddhist beliefs, which says you should not be vain, but only used young girls for sex because of his writing popularity. (Morrill) He liked some aspects of Valley Forge Military Academy, but publically spoke of it as a "hell hole." (Morrill)
             Salinger, while not being an outstanding writer, was well fluent at words and at captivating audiences at the time. His stories mostly dealt with the loneliness and frustration of youth caught in a world of conformity (Johnson, Kate). His best seller "The Catcher in the Rye, which sells 4000,000 books annually (Johnston, Laurie), was more or less a testament to the innocence and inability to lie of youth. (Johnson, Kate) His writing all began by in his first college he attended, by writing the "Young Folks." (Morrill) Since then he has published short stories and four novels: in 1951 "The Catcher in the Rye", in 1961, "Franny and Zooey", in 1963 "Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters", and "Seymour: An Introduction. Also he published in the Saturday Evening Post and Colliers about 35 short stories between 1948 and 1965. (Morrill)
