The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd (pg.1-102)
             Characters in this story are Lily Owens, the main character who is actually telling story, and only four-teen years old. Her mother, Deborah, had died when she was four years old, and has many questions to her mother's death. She doesn't really have the proper manners of a female should, but wishes that she does. She's fascinated by bees that comes out of her walls at night, and she tries to catches them. She lives with her father who's very strict and mean, and she calls him T. Ray. Then she has a "stand-in-mother" Rosaleen. Rosaleen is an african american who cares a lot for Lillly, and has never had a daughter before. She doesnt' know that much about being a lady, but she still cares for Lilly. Lilly is just a young girl trying to fit into life, and trying to figure out what she should do in her life. Her father on the other hand doesn't approve Lilly for doing much things except to work at his peach stand. He's very strict and cruel to Lilly, and he always assumes things instead of knowing what had happened. Rosaleen is very caring, and does act like a mother for Lilly, and wants to help Lilly find out more about her mother's death. Conflicts in this story includes the fact that Lilly wants to become a proper young lady, have friends, be popular, and be able to do stuff all other young girls can do. The only thing that's standing in her way is mostly her father, cold-hearted and doesn't really care for Lilly all that much. He doesn't want to spend all this money on Lilly and thinks it's just all a waste.The tone is more seriously since Lilly is getting nowhere in life at this moment, she has no answers to what she needs answers too, she has no one to tell her that she's gorgeous, she has no father which loves her. This section of the book made me think about how fathers could be so against their daughters without a mother figured, and how this country was once going through
