rebellious act. After the incident at school, Andy first experienced a sense of not being accepted by his peers that would later fuel his artistic rebellion. His "tears later changed to calculated dissensions" (Koestenbaum 2). Andy's family moved across town to a brick row house in the South Oakland section of Pittsburgh. That same year Andy contracted scarlet fever. Scarlet fever typically inflames the nose and mouth and gave Warhol his famous red-nose. Andy did start school again, after an emotional display that included considerable kicking and screaming, this time as a second grader at the Homes Elementary School. Andy was placed in special educational classes because he learned differently and constantly rebelled against instruction. (Koestenbaum 2). Warhol's failures in school highlighted and exacerbated his low self-esteem and led, in part, to his grudge against American society and its institutions (Bourdon 4).
