Slang is words or phrases that are not considered as part of Standard English. It is often used in dialect or colloquial language and is in common informal everyday use. An example of very strong, powerful slang is cockney rhyming slang. There is a lot of concern from educationalists that 'proper English' is being destroyed due to overuse of slang. They blame it on email and mobile phone text messaging. By looking at opinions of various experts it should become clearer as to how far slang should be considered as part of Standard English.
             It is surprising to some that Shakespeare made up hundreds of new words for his plays that are now part of the English language; and this invention of words is a continuing process. Slang words creep into everyday use with every new generation. This 'fashion' for words seems to be changing more and more rapidly particularly since the use of computers and mobile phone text messaging has come into being. Groups of people from different geographical areas in England use slang words that no one else can understand.
             Most peoples' opinions of slang are mixed. Some say slang has always been use. Nigel Wilcockson director of Penguin books states, 'For the past 200 years every single generation has said that the upcoming generation doesn't speak the way they do, but the language hasn't fallen apart as a result.' Others say without slang our English language would be boring. Tony Thorne director of language centre Kings College implied 'Slang dramatises and brightens up their speech.' Even though it is said that slang will be the cause for our 'proper' language to be lost, there are others who disagree.
