The Massachusetts Bay Colony, which later engulfed the small Plymouth colony, agreed that all property-owning, church going males could vote in elections. This showed the emphasis on religion in the Northern colonies, which will be covered more in depth later. Each family was issued a plot of land, and the villages were planned to provide a little to everyone, with a town square and church in the middle. The Chesapeake colonists, however, did not wish to plant a permanent settlement. The Virginia Company, which issued the charter, was to be liquefied after a few years by the stockholders. The main purpose of the investment in America was to make money through the discovery of gold and the possible discovery of a passage to the Indies through America.
