The Uniform Crime Reports are a method in which the government collects data, and monitors criminal activity in the United States. They have both positive and negative attributes that have influenced different aspects of society. The Uniform Crime Reports are an annually published statistical summary, which are a reflection of crimes reported to the FBI by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. These reports are sponsored by the United States Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
             Crimes are divided into twenty-nine types of offenses. Eight of which are major crimes. These crimes include murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson. These crimes are also known as "index offenses" or Part I of the Uniform Crime Reports. Part II of the reports consists of a group of crimes that are less serious than the crimes included in the Crime Index. These crimes are also called victimless crimes or social order offenses. Instead of using crimes reported to the police, Part II offenses are for recorded arrests. Some of these crimes include forgery, prostitution, public drunkenness, and even runaways.
             Even though the Uniform Crime Reports represent a significant amount of crime in the United States, it is not completely accurate. The reports do not distinguish between attempted crimes and completed crimes and are based on reports made by citizens to the police. Some victims do not always make reports and even if they do they are not always accurate. This is common when it comes to the reporting of rape. The UCR records rape of females only. In criminal justice, when reporting a crime an officer is supposed to report the most serious crime that has taken place. This leaves out all of the lesser offenses that could have occurred.
