Backwoods archery

             It was getting to be late summer and bow hunting for white tailed deer was almost upon us. For many, the past eight months dragged on and it seemed as if time stood still, not being able to throw on the camouflage gear and go out in the tree stand to bow hunt. For these people going to Backwoods, archery is their eight month substitute for bow hunting.
             In my home town of Suamico, Wisconsin, many of the local bow hunters spend their nights at Backwoods Archery after work or school practicing their archery skills and preparing for the season ahead. If they can't be in their stand then they are going to be practicing their shot in the mean time.
             Backwoods Archery is a nearly brand new indoor shooting range, that was built in 2001. The outside is all wood and looks like an old cabin that would be found in the northern part or Wisconsin. Inside, it is very open and gives you a feel of being in the woods, with all of the three dimensional targets spread around the room. Every type of animal that can be hunted with a bow can be found within these walls. In the far corner from the entrance is where a full body mount of a huge black bear stands facing all of the people there shooting, giving you a creepy feeling and makes a shiver run down your spine. Other than the bear mount, everything else makes you feel as comfortable as if you were in your bow stand.
             On one Saturday afternoon, around 1:30, I was there shooting. I started to watch the others as they shot at the three dimensional targets. There weren't many people at Backwoods that day, as compared to most Saturday afternoons. Besides me there were only three others there shooting: a young boy, his dad, and another older man shooting alone on the far side of the building.
