             Traditions are a significant factor in every culture. They are unique and distinguishable, just as the people and country from which they arose. As a teenager of Armenian heritage I am aware of many celebrated ethnic traditions such as "Barekentan", which acknowledges the bare essentials of life, and "Vartevar", which is celebrated at the beginning of Spring with ornate weaves of flowers and hand-made pots carrying sweet water. But more important than these beautiful observations, is the timeless Armenian tradition of valuing family above all else.
             I consider myself very lucky because I know where I have come from and how difficult it was to get here. I remember my great-grandfather telling me how he survived the genocide of 1915, and how painful those days were. I recall tears, anger, and promises of revenge. My heritage has made me stronger by providing me with a sturdy foundation to stand up on. I am grateful to my family for unlocking the historical ties to my past.
             The feeling of belonging is crucial in an Armenian family. A sense of support is always present, and such a feeling is irreplaceable. Family is that barrier confidence, providing self-esteem and unconditional love. When my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, people said that the disease would wilt her body and manacle her soul. But the constant presence of having loved ones near provides a sense of security and hope for survival.
             There are so many cultures that are indifferent to family. I hear of siblings living in separate states, connected only through a telephone wire. And what about the lonely eyes of elders in nursing homes. Shouldn't they be given the gift of love at what may be the last precious moments of their fading lives?
