4 Little Girls

             When you first asked what the title meant today I had no idea. I was thinking about how emotional this documentary made me feel. And it hit me. 4 Little Girls, automatically makes me think of young children under the age of seven. Knowing that the documentary is about a bombing that killed young children, it instantly leaves me feeling sad, troubled, and hurting. I have these instant emotions, because they are "little" children. They haven't experienced life and are naive. Because Lee choices this title I think he is looking for that slam of emotions. In our society when victims are "little", our emotions are often more intense and deep. If the audience had known the "little" girls were teenagers, I don't feel the documentary would have had the same emotional impact. People tend not to feel so saddened if people are older when they are killed. Why does a person's age effect how sad people feel is what I'd like to know? Killing is killing, regardless!
             The sounds and music of the film made you feel like you were actually in Birmingham. The jazz and southern blues gave me the feeling of living in that part of the country. I truly loved the clarinet playing in the background when they were speaking about Carol Robertson. It gave you a connection she was a "living" person. The bombing sounds and knife slashing made those scenes much more intense and striking.
             The movie really hit home when Addie Collins' sister was talking about the funeral and the calming presence of Martin Luther King. Her description of how she could only feel and not hear is how I have felt at funerals of loved ones, but never knew how to explain it. It is a tear jerking part of the documentary.
