             Through the use of color, Homer contrasts and defines the boat from the ocean. He paints the boat and the people in it with mostly warm hues such as the reds and oranges of their clothes, the golden-brown of the sunlight reflecting off the wood and the mast, and the yellow and tan of the sunlight reflecting off the sail. Contrastingly, Homer paints the sea with cooler hues, mixing some blues, greens, purples, and black. By using warm colors for the boat and cool colors for the water, Homer uses these relatively dull colors to complement and further enhance each other. He also uses perceptual colors, such as in painting the ship on the right side of the canvas, in which the change in atmosphere in light farther back into the horizon changes the color of the ship to a dull and cooler shade.
