The Problems of Teenage Pregnancy

             One's whole outlook on life can be changed simply by using the social imagination. Today, especially in America, people as a whole seem to be ignorant and narrow minded towards various touchy platforms. People think they have a good grasp on why incidents occur the way they do, and do not want to be told otherwise. They do not look at why incidents keep happening and what is causing the cycle. By using the sociological imagination, one can understand the larger historical scene in terms for its meaning for the inner life. A summation for this perplexing viewpoint is purely how one looks at the world.
             Peter Berger once said "It can be said that the first wisdom of sociology is this- Things are not the way they seem. This too is a deceptively simple statement. It ceases to be simple after a while. Social reality turns out to have many layers of meaning. The discovery of each new layer changes the perception of a whole." This quote is right on target with the previously stated run down on sociology. Berger is saying from the outside the sociological outlook seems simple but in fact is deeper than one presumes after looking at all the diverse perspectives. Take teenage pregnancy for example, there are contributing factors for why this is a reoccurring dilemma. If one were not to use the sociological imagination they would say that teenagers are just dim-witted and make poor decisions. This would be the viewpoint of the non social imagination who does not look past the first layer and into the inner meaning of the happening. Yet by using this sociological imagination tool, one can see different angles and explanations for why this happens in our society.
             The typical stance people use on viewing teenage pregnancy is that it is a personal issue. They say that these young teens made an individual decision on having a baby or being sexually active. By viewing through the sociological imagination one sees it as a society's problem. How ...
