Women in Criminal Justice

             Do you or do you not believe women are competent to work all jobs within the criminal justice system?
             Women have been involved in some field of criminal justice for many years. Although some jobs may be more difficult than others, women can be just as competent to do all jobs in the system as any other person. I believe the key to women being looked at as competent is proper schooling and training, the ability to have a strong mind about the job that must be performed, in the profession that has been chosen, and the determination to succeed. If women possess these 4 elements, then there should be no reason for them not to receive the same advancement that any of their male colleagues would receive for the performance they have shown.
             Although women have been a part of the law enforcement field for more than 80 years, it was not until the 1960's that their duties and responsibilities began to expand. Even now, women must face many obstacles when working, or pursuing a career, in law enforcement. Some examples of these obstacles are, denial of proper training, attitudes of male co-workers and supervisors, and the lack of agency sponsored opportunities for networking. Although, at times these can seem like obstacles that can never be overcome, they can with the right attitude. If possessing a strong will and a strong mind, the strive needed to make it to where she wants to be, and the ability to look past the negativity that could come her way, then any woman can find herself with a successful rewarding career in law enforcement.
             A woman might possibly have a better chance of career success in the courts, than in any other component of the criminal justice system. With jobs like victims services, investigators, clerks, stenographers, and of course lawyers and judges, there is a wide variety of jobs in the court systems.
