Woodstock

             The last true hippie marched out of Max Yasgur's muddy pasture more than 25 years ago. During those few days the Woodstock music and art fair drew more that 450,000 people to a pasture in Sullivan County.
             Woodstock took place with the minds of 4 very different young men, John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfeld, and Michael Lang. The oldest of the 4 was 26 who was John Roberts. Roberts supplied the money. He was heir to a drugstore and toothpaste manufacturing fortune. The 4 men had met in February 1969 and all seemed interested in the idea of a cultural exposition/rock concert/extravaganza. By the end of the 3rd meeting the little party up in Woodstock grew to the Worlds biggest Rock and roll show. The 4 partners formed a corporation in March. Each held 25 percent. The company was called Woodstock Ventures, Inc., after the hip little Ulster County town where Dylan lived. The 4 men soon drove up to Wallkill in late March in order to find a site for the event. The 4 settled on a 300-acre industrial park, which offered perfect access. It was less than a mile from Rt. 17, which hooked into the New York state thruway. But on July 15th 1969. The Wallkill Zoning Board of Appeals officially banned Woodstock. To the applause of the residents, the board members said that the organizer's plans were incomplete. They also said outdoor toilets, such as those to be used at the concert, were illegal in Wallkill. Two weeks earlier, the town board passed a law requiring a permit for any gathering of more than 5,000 people. "The law they passed excluded one thing and one thing only- Woodstock. The Wallkill board may have done Woodstock ventures a favor. If Woodstock had been staged in Wallkill, Lang said, the vibes would have either have squelched the show or turned it into a riot.
