Professional Accountability

             When comparing The American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics and The University of Phoenix Code of Student Responsibilities, one has to realize that these standards pertain to the nurse as a student and the student who is also a nurse. These roles are interchangeable. These principles are comprised of ethics that we use in our decision making of day to day activities. It is how we deal with our professional relationships, as far as colleagues, patients and others that we serve that must be considered.
             I chose one code from each of the above to relate my professional and academic practices to and to evaluate my personal beliefs in relation to these guidelines. I realize there may be instances where my beliefs and morals may conflict with these codes of ethics and I may find it hard to follow the guidelines set forth for me.
             "The nurse, in all professional relationships, practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth and uniqueness of every individual, unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of health problems." (ANA, 2001).
             When applying this code to my professional practice, I find that due to my personal morals and ethics, I must work harder to show respect and compassion for certain untoward situations. I must constantly remind myself that not everyone had the opportunities that were afforded me and I cannot judge another for their shortcomings. I must accept this person as a human being and treat their disease process without prejudice. I cannot treat them differently and must strive to learn from their personal situations.
             I consider a person's lifestyle, their values and religious beliefs when planning their care. I know that I do not have to agree with their life choices but I must treat them with dignity and respect. I will never socially isolate patients just because their lifestyle may di...
