             The innocence and unawareness of these characters is soon lost as they take the first step of their physical and cognitive journeys. For Jim, this initial step is in Brisbane, and for Marlow, in Belgium and then the outer station of the Congo. Brisbane represents Jims last moment of innocence. He is swept up in the euphoria and witnesses the immense social and human forces at work, particularly the extreme sense of community generated by the prospect of war and Australia's involvement, "it was as if the ground before him...had suddenly tilted in the direction of Europe...and they were all now on a dangerous slope." something Jim is unaccustomed to. He is infected by the electric mood of the people and notices how all the man are now comrades. It is here that he loses much of his innocence in a physical sense, with the "sandy haired" woman, but also in a psychological sense, with his cognitive growth, "so much of what a man was existed within and was known only to himself.." Similarly, Marlow's world becomes not only tilted, but also uneasy. The apprehension that is generated of what is to come is on a larger scale than in Fly Away Peter, which gives little incite at this stage as to the horrors that will be faced. Marlow begins to lose his unawareness is soon lost as a sense of urgency grows within him to reach the Congo and Kurtz, and the, "two women...knitting black wool" foreshadow the darkness he is to encounter. Leaving Belgium is facilitated by the reference to Fresleven whose death illustrates the possible transformations that Europeans take within Africa.
