The story "Carnal Knowledge" starts on the beach in California where Jim
(The main character in the story) is reading a book, when a mongrel dog named
Alf empties his bladder on Jim's chest. Then as he gets ready to beat the beast he
notices a beautiful woman approaching him. After Alena Jorgensen introduced
herself they went to her house so Jim's shirt could be washed.
After a night of great sex Jim called off work thinking he would lie in bed
having sex all day, but he found himself at an animal rights protest. They protested
all day and when a rich woman got out of her limo Jim screamed at her and called
Her a "Murderer! Torturer! Nazi!" Then the limo driver beat Jim into
Unconsciousness. After demonstrating at a few more rally Almena tells Jim that
they are going to "liberate some turkeys".
The next morning Jim tells his boss that he has pancreatic cancer, and they
drive to San Joaquin Valley to meet a man named Rolfe. They make their plans
and at night drive to free the turkeys. During the break Jim was separated from the
others and they picked him up the next morning. Alena told Jim that she was going
with Rolf and that she would see him in a month or so, then they went their
separate ways. On his way home Jim saw an accident with a semi truck full of
turkeys, and he said to himself "Meat, it's only meat."
The author (T. Coraghessan Boyle) showed in this story how a life can be
altered. Jim had gone from being a normal thirty year old with a job and a regular
meat eating life to being a radical liberalist. All of this was done for a woman that
I feel that the author did a fine job showing how stupid and man can be
when he thinks he is in love with someone, and he thinks that he is loved back. At least at the end Jim realizes that she doesn't love him and he goes back home, hopefully to a normal life.
