There are two types of characters in all novels dynamic ,and static. A dynamic
character changes thought out the story. A static character is the complete opposite, they
do not change through the duration of the play. Reverend John Hale is the dynamic
character of this story. He is also a minister from Beverly who is called to Salem by
Reverend Parris to investigate the situation. He is about forty years old and has a strong
belief in the authority of the church. He considers himself the authority on such matters as
witchcraft. His view on the authority of the court changes as he later learns that the law is
not always right, just because it is the law. Reverend Hale ends up siding with John
At the beginning of the play Hale wanted to find all of the witches and make a
name for himself. "..they (the books) are waited with authority " Hale fancies himself a
new doctor with the cure to save the world of the plague the devil has inflicted on it.
Hale is almost more concerned with how he looks then he is about his patents . He is not
Through out the play Hale seams to become more and more unsure of him self.
When questioning Mrs. Procter Hale wants to believe her but he also some what believes
Abigail. It is like Hale is being split in two directions and can not decide which is the
right path. "I do not know you (Procter and his wife)... but I have always thought you
good people." But the reasons Hale is at the Proctor's is because " Your (Mr. Procter)
wife's mentioned I court today"
At the end of the story Hale opposes the court 100%. "I (Hale) Denounce these
proceedings! I denounce this court!" Hale realizes that he was wrong, so he try's to
