The Importance of a Liberal Education

             The last couple of decades have brought along a drastic change in technology and communication that have, in turn, changed the way students of higher education are taught and trained. Although greatly declining in the last few years, liberal arts education is still the foundation of learning for almost all areas of expertise and can benefit college students in a number of ways. Liberal education can broaden career opportunities, encourage cultural literacy, and help citizens benefit from a democratic society.
             A liberal arts education can greatly broaden career opportunities for college students by giving them the critical thinking and communication skills, plus the flexibility necessary to be successful in almost all aspects of a career. In today's rapidly growing and changing world these traits are important to the survival of people in the workforce. In Jamienne Studley's article "Are Liberal Arts Dead?" she states, "The core curriculum [of liberal arts] equips students with the indispensable tools of intellectual discourse and discovery- the ability to read and think critically, to reason quantitively, and to write clearly and precisely". Although an Art History major may not find a satisfying career in their exact course of study, it is almost certain that they will have retained the skills, and the knowledge to gain more skills, in countless others. Studley goes on to say that "Thirty eight percent of CEO's majored in liberal arts". While their various degrees in subjects like mediaeval Philosophy, English or Chemistry may not have helped them reach the top, the problem solving and people skills they gained in the course of receiving them certainly did. Being able to effectively communicate with people in any situation, to write clearly and with direction, and to defend an argument without becoming defensive are all qualities that are key in the modern business world.
