In the gun battle that was prolonged after this incident, five terrorists were shot and killed by German officials, three terrorists were captured, and one German police officer was killed. In total, eleven Israeli athletes died from the massacre in the Munich Olympics, and the international community was devastated. The massacre of 11 Olympic athletes on September 5 impacted the world emotionally. The night of the attack people went to sleep after hearing that the media was told that the Olympians HAD been rescued (Garner 82). However, the next morning, people in the US turned on their televisions to Jim McCay saying,
When I was a boy, my father told me that in life, our greatest ambitions and worst fears are seldom realized. Tonight, our worst fears have been realized. Two of the hostages were killed in their rooms this morning – excuse me, that's yesterday morning. Nine others were killed at the airport tonight. (Marcovitz 73)
He then continued, "They're all gone" (Marcovitz 73). 80,000 people attended the funeral for the 11 dead, and while the games did continue, the atmosphere was particularly uneasy (Infoplease.com 1). The games resumed with many disappointments for the American team. However, while the Americans experienced many disappointments in Munich, no country had to bear more than the Israelis.10 of the eleven murdered men were returned to Israel and were given a full state funeral.
