In "To Kill a Mockingbird" there are two different codes (of behaviour and belief) that come into conflict. There is the archaic notion of Southern courtesy and class, held by most of the town of Maycomb. It is a code defined by racial supremacy and maintaining the social status. The other code is one of treating all people with the same courtesy and respect, regardless of the colour of their skin or wealth.
Perhaps no-one embodies the old Southern code more than Aunt Alexandra. She believes that her prestigious lineage makes her superior to most others. She sees herself as a lady, and that her famiiy's fine breeding leaves herself and her family above other town people like the Cunninghams and the Ewells, who she treats with contempt. This attitude also plays out more strongly in relation to how she views African Americans. In regard to Tom's (unfair) rape trial, Aunt Alexandra clearly shows her racist character as she doesn't want Atticus to defend Tom. Aunt Alexandra's morals are skewed in terms of racism and class, and the town operates the same way.

Although not bold in his deameanour, Atticus 'stands out' in comparison to the townfolk because they limit who they will help and support. Atticus goes beyond just helping others; he takes the time to understand them. He reveals this quality when he teaches his daughter Scout, that to truly understand a person it is necessary to get inside their skin and walk in their shoes for a while. Atticus does this with all the people he associates with. Rather than writing people off through judgment, Atticus' compassion comes to the fore. Unlike Aunt Alexander, Atticus' nature is one of understanding, sympathy and consistency among all people.
