             In order to rehabilitate and maximize treatment for the mentally ill and ultimately ease their reintegration into society, enabling them to lead normal lives, we need to understand society's attitudes and responses to mental illness. This need to study society's attitudes towards mental illness is not just important in preventing public rejection of the mentally ill, but also the idea that such attitudes will unavoidably affect social policy (Weiss, 1985).
             There has been evidence to suggest that those in the mental health field are actually quicker in attributing odd or exceptional behavior as mental illness than the general public. However societal rejection is almost always inevitable once this label has been placed upon someone, weather it be assigned by a medical professional or the community. The mentally ill label more often than not leads to an irreversible diminished stigma and standing in a community, a situation that aggravates whatever problems of adjustment were already present (Weiss, 1985).
