Thomas Hobbes believed that "The fundamental motivation that spurs human beings on is selfishness." This selfishness aided in the creation of a much darker side to the Enlightenment, fueled by greed and superiority, which included colonialism and imperialism. "The impulse to dominant nature leads to domination of humanity and that emancipatory goals may have oppressive consequences." The consequences in some cases, such as the Holocaust, were more than just oppressive, they were genocidal. If Enlightenment thinkers were to see the short film, "Lunch," they would justify the trials and tribulations of the character's actions as method of achieving self-betterment. According to Hobbes "Everything that human beings feel, think, and judge, are simply physical reactions to external stimuli" therefore in is natural for the character to strive for the candy bar.
             Confucius, on the other hand, would have a totally different assessment as to the actions taken by the character in the film.
