In the short story The Lottery, the significance of the lottery and its tradition has been lost for the most part through the years. Instead of all the villagers looking forward to the yearly tradition and what it stands for it has just become something that has to be done. The lottery has always been a part of their lives whether they like it or not, they must participate in this yearly ritual. Instead of talking about it, they concentrate on other things like dinner for example or the woman catch up on the latest gossip. Then there is Tessie Hutchinson who tried to argue the outcome of the lottery at the end and lived to regret it.
             The lottery is something that stands for something good, a tradition that has been carried down through the years from generation to generation. Just ask old man Warner, he has participated in seventy-six lotteries, this being his seventy-seventh and still believes in its meaning completely. There was even an old saying he quoted to everyone at the ceremony, "Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon" which meant after the sacrifice the crops would do very well that season (30). There was talk amongst the villagers of how a village in the area had discontinued the lottery and old man Warner called them fools and said maybe next they will want to move back into caves and eat nothing but chickweed and acorns. Mr. Warner believes that without the sacrifice, the crops will fail and nothing could change his mind about that. The black box which has been used for
             the lottery to hold the slips of paper for the drawing has been neglected. Other items that were once used as part of the lottery that went along with the box had been lost long ago. The box itself is made of some parts of the old box used before this one.
