The elements of Faith and Reason have been widely discussed and debated in almost all religious circles. Throughout time, religious writers have tried to explain their beliefs by showing the relationship between Faith and Reason. Western and Eastern writers differ in their efforts to reconcile Faith and Reason.
The Western religions, such as Christianity make a strong correlation between Faith and Reason. In Christianity, Faith typically means believing that the Bible is God's word and that every word written in the Bible is true. Through Faith, a Christian also believes that Jesus Christ is God's son and belief in Christ's death on the cross will give a Christian eternal life in heaven. It seems to me that Christianity has tried to bridge the gap between Faith and Reason in the last few years. In the past, Christians had to believe that every word in the Bible is true. If a Christian did not believe a part of the Bible then they were made to feel like they did not have enough Faith in God. Writers like Tertullian believed that once a person had chosen Christianity as a faith, he/she must stop seeking. Tertullian taught that a person could only experience God when he/she became submissive to the word(s) of God and believed the words as total truth. I think it is ignorant for a person to hear or read something, even the Bible, and believe everything completely. However, lately Christians seem to be taking the Bible and mixing in reason and science. For example, the subject of evolution has always haunted the Christian church because the Bible clearly states that all life started through creation. Yet, through Reason, a person can also understand how scientific facts can back up the theory of evolution. I think that more churches should focus on the more important doctrine of the Bible that will actually encourage a more moral life.
