Heart of Darkness

             In the book Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad uses Images, symbols, and events in order to develop the theme of civility vs. savagery. Conrad effectively evokes the natives as savages by using language, distinct images, and symbols. He uses strong words to describe the natives' appearances, characteristics and presumed behaviour. Another obvious indication of a prime and savage culture using language, which gives the reader the illusion of wildness, is the author's use of the word cannibals. By using the word cannibal the author implies a savage or uncivilized race. Especially when back then, the perception of natives is the jungle, when you think of the jungle you think of natives. The author very often uses, constant use of strong language, vivid images, and refers to light and dark a lot in order to develop the theme civility vs. savagery.
             Joseph Conrad uses very strong language in describing the natives in this novel. His descriptions are the use of very strong and erotic words like "wild ", "intense", and "cannibals" these are all words which show obvious indications of prime and savage culture using language. The use of the word cannibal implies a savage and/or uncivilized race, since both the word and the act are unalike. For example the descriptive image of a boatload of natives paddling down stream is very vivid and distinct. He says, "Unexpected, wild, and violent as they had been, the (cannibals) had given me an irresistible impression of sorrow. The glimpse of the steamboat had for some reason filled those savages (natives) with unrestrained grief...even extreme grief may ultimately vent itself in violence..." (78). The author's clear description of the natives is that they're wild, violent, and dangerous. Already the use of the author's words made the image of the native more frightening and violent.
