WHAT'S IN A NAME

In the 1970's advertisement was giving funny, new, creative and original names to everyday simple products to make them more alluring and desirable. Who can deny crispy green salads or garden fresh vegetables sound more appealing than simply vegetables and salads, although both refer to the same products? In his article Printed Noise George F. Will expresses his dissenting views on the fun names advertisers give products and believes all educated people should refuse to use them. I agree with Will in that language is being distorted by giving products cute funny names. However, I disagree with his unwillingness to accept change.
In Printed Noise Will shows the reader how marketers that create different names for the same product distort the language. For example, a hamburger is just a piece of meat between two buns. However, depending where you dine, you order a "Whopper", a "Heroburger", or a "steerburger". Isn't a hamburger just a hamburger? Yes. But nowadays, in vulgar language and popular culture a "whopper" or a "heroburger" means a hamburger. Who, when mentioned either name, does not imagine a piece of meat in between two buns?
Will's story of the gentleman at Burger King shows his adherence to Victorian values and his resistance to change. "For upper-middle class Victorians, whom Will admires civilization rested upon rigid boundaries of class, gender, race, and sexuality as well as on strict standards of conduct". In this story Will is despising the fact gentlemen have to wait in line to be helped by a teenage girl in a fast food restaurant. For him, it is better to starve than to go through this ordeal to order a "Yumbo". Why is it difficult for educated gentlemen to embrace change? Perhaps it is because the foundations of civilization are evolving and their values and beliefs questioned and dishonored.
