He did not have religious faith or faith in his fellow human beings in Salem. And because he didn't have faith he became defenseless to the "flaming arrows of the evil one". Goodman Brown like all of us has battles against the devil over our guilt, our sins, and our fears. And it is up to us to decide whether we will stand up to our sins.
God is the most important place to place your faith for most people. Placing faith in God can help someone become a better person. A person that believes in God and follows the Bible is usually nicer than someone that does not.
