"My application was at first fluctuating and uncertain; it gained strength as I proceeded, and soon became so ardent and eager that the stars often disappeared in the light of morning whilst I was yet engaged in the laboratory"(60).
             Victor completely forgot all he had learned about life, about relationships, and about those who cared for him, and he for them. He became obsessed with science and forgot about humanity, becoming obsessed not only with creating a human, but with death as well: "To examine the causes of life, we must first have recourse to death"(61). Victor 's obsession drove him to learn how life is created, and in doing so further stroked his massive ego:
             "After days and nights of incredible labour and fatigue, I succeeded in discovering the cause of generation and life... "I was surprised, that among so many men of genius who had directed their inquiries towards the same science, that I alone should be reserved to discover so astonishing a secret"(62).
             At first Victor did not know what to do with his new found knowledge, but soon decided that he would perform a God-like act. Victor would create a human, in his image: "Although I possessed the capacity of bestowing animation...I doubted at first whether I should attempt the creation of a being like myself, or one of simpler organization..." (63), and "A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me"(64).
