Realizations in The Moonstone

             Eleven different narrators report the events that occurred in "The Moonstone" written by Wilkie Collins. He uses them to show how different perspectives help to determine what actually happened in the novel. Jane Tompkins believes that there is nothing more important than one's own perspective. She feels as though facts may be true, however a person's perception of the fact makes it vary. Therefore, a fact has no true meaning. This argument helps to show how in "The Moonstone" perspective depends on the narrator. In order to interpret what is going on, you must focus on who is telling the story and extract only the objectivity of it. Tompkins also emphasizes context. She is analytic and reflective, which while reading "The Moonstone" you have to be. You need to not only follow along to solve the mystery but to determine the truth behind the narration. Tompkins and Collins are also similar in their style. Both take a while to make their points, but they still remain effective.
             Tompkins's style of writing is very repetitive in order to get the point across that perspectives change everything. She focuses on the relationship between reality and fantasy. She realizes how when researching or trying to put together the facts it may be hard. She states after researching for her essay "Indians" that "while all three critics acknowledge that Indians and Europeans behave differently from one another, the behavior differs, as it were, within the order of the same: all three assume, though only Hudson makes the assumption explicit, that an understanding of relations between the Europeans and the Indians must be elaborated in European terms...This difference at the level of explanation calls into question the possibility of obtaining any theory-independent account of interaction between Indians and Europeans" (Tompkins 726).
