As the epic Beowulf progressed, the hero, Beowulf, evolved from a heroic warrior into a heroic king during the time period where reputation was what one utilized to identify oneself. Beowulf inspires both the youth to be people having heroic qualities for both warriors and kings and provides an insight into the lifestyle of those living in the medieval times.
As Beowulf beings, every councilman among my people supported my resolve to come here to you. At least, King Horothgar, because, all knew of my awesome strength. They had seemed me bolstered in the blood of enemies when I battled brutes. (29)
Beowulf shows in that statement alone the he has strength, courage, and loyalty, which are qualities of a good warrior. The strength appears in him having beaten the many beasts, troll and sea brutes. Courage allowed him to face the monster, and he shows loyalty to his councilmen and people, for which they show their support for him. Youth today can take from the story the traits that are seen in Beowulf. They can be adventurous, but being adventurous would need to be strong, courageous, and loyal. As time progressed, Beowulf evolved from a good warrior into a good king. Kings are expected to be hospitable, generous, and skilled politically, and eventually Beowulf attains these three traits. All three can be viewed in his last battle with the dragon.
Men at arms, remain here on the barrow, safe in your armor, to see which of us is better in the end at bearing wounds in a deadly fray. This fight is not yours, nor is it up t any man except me to measure his strength against the monster or to prove his worth. (171)
