Columbus

             Christopher Columbus, son of Dominico Columbo and Suzanna Fontanarosa, passed away November 26, 1506. He left behind two sons, Fernando and Diego Columbus, and his wife, Felipa Peristrello e Moniz. Columbus was well known as a fearless explorer, a loyal ambassador to the Spanish crown, a tireless missionary, and one of the most powerful members of the Spanish nobility.
             Columbus was born in the Italian port city of Genoa to a upwardly mobile working class family. His father was a wool weaver, while his mother was the daughter of a wool weaver. Despite his very modest upbringing, he received basic levels of reading, writing, and arithmatic from his weaving school. His childhood years were spent besides his father processing and selling wool. Even though Columbus worked for his family business, these ties were not strong enough to keep him away from the ports. Soon, Columbus became a seafarer, taking odd jobs from boat to boat for a number of years.
             Columbus accomplished countless things during his roughly half-century lifetime. His explorations to Asia brought much money to the Spanish economy, as well as vast amounts of land discovered in the name of Ferdinand and Isabella. His loyalty to the Spanish crown and country in general was without question. An example of this could be found in Columbus' letter to in which he states, "I have taken possession of all these islands, for their Highnesses, and all may be more extensive than I Know, or can say, and I hold them for their Highness, who can command them as absolutely as the kingdoms of Castile." He was a fearless adventurer and explorer. He faced the threat of unseen monsters, strange creatures, and dangerous natives. "As for monsters, I have found no trace of them except at the point in the second isle as one enters the Indies, which is inhabited by people considered in all the isles as most ferocious, who eat human flesh."
