In Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë applies the use of diction and metaphoric language to reveal Jane's state of mind upon the returning to Thornfield after a long walk to deliver a letter for Mrs. Fairfax. Jane realizes how confining the estate is and how much of an impact her job has on her. Brontë's diction and metaphoric language creates a sense entrapment on the part of Jane and a need for personal growth.
             While Jane returns to Thornfield after delivering a letter, she feels as if she was being restricted to a small space and unable to breath freely. She is returning to the uncomfortable "stagnation" of Thornfield. Although Jane is only eighteen years old, she has been trapped and not let go. She wants to live life to the fullest and experience other things. Jane needs to fill her life with love and friendship rather than seclusion and isolation. Jane finds that she is "incapable of appreciating" the life she lives at Thornfield and longs to search for new things to encounter and accomplish. Jane expresses the idea that she could have been taught by "rough and better experience[s]" while "tossed in the storms of an uncertain...life." Jane almost would have cared more for a life that she did not know the next move. She wants to live a spontaneous life rather than being confined to one particular job, one lifestyle and one household. Jane implies that she is low in spirits and is tired of "sitting still in a 'too easy chair.'" She is in need of variety in her life and feels as though she has been sitting to long in one place and needs to get out and experience new things.
