             To many people appearance is all that counts, in this story this is emphasized. Gregor suddenly changes from human to insect, and through the change of his appearance, everything else changes. He is no longer accepted, and he is no longer able to perform the duties that are required of him. Everything has changed and all he could do was hide.
             With the distortion of his body Gregor realized that he can no longer drink milk, or put his clothing. All he can do is crawl, and become a waste of space. This is the reaction that society shows, they are afraid of what he has become because they cannot explain it. Gregor's mom was afraid, and it took her two weeks to come and see her own son. "In the first two weeks his parents couldn't muster the courage to come into his room, and he often heard them expressing complete satisfaction with the work his sister was doing now" (32).They figure that he is useless to society, and it is left alone and never looked at again. The final moment when he becomes nothing is when his sister, Grete, votes that the family should leave because the "dung beetle" is no longer Gregor. All society looked at him with fear because they did not know what to do, and when they realized that he was harmless, they did not wanted to deal with him.
             I agree with the author's idea for several reasons. This story portrays human reaction in way no one ever did. Humans in general when faced with something unknown, look at the situation with fear and retaliate with anger, that is the reaction that Gregor's father assumes when he sees his son, "But his father was in no mood to observe such niceties; as soon as he walked in, he yelled "Ah"! in a tone that suggested he was both furious and happy at the same time" (37).
             Humans when faced with something they cannot explain, assume that it might be dangerous, so they react with fear. What we really have to do is take ...
