Sports Essay — Boxing

             Boxing has been described as barbarous and as outrage over the dignity of man. But can such a judgment be passed on a sport that has been established for numerous centuries? For many young men and women, boxing offers an escape from a life of inevitable poverty, street fights, expulsion, teenage gangs, and ultimately prison.
             Everyone has a dream, whether to become rich, fly their own helicopter, or own a fancy cottage. People dream of becoming teachers, professors, or even lawyers; however, this may not be the case; these people are not the academic type. These people may be the physical type. Young men and women who have grown up in "rough" neighborhoods where they may have had to be physically capable of defending themselves have two things in common, the ability to use their fists and ride their opponent's punches. These abilities make it possible for them to provide a better life for themselves and their families because they can defend themselves. Many physically powerful people may take up boxing because they like it, not because they are forced into the ring or made to fight. They are men or women who love to fight, not to inflict pain on someone but because they have always fought to protect themselves and because it satisfies their urges. These urges are to be out there on their own, to prove that they are the one and that they can become the next Mike Tyson of the business. It is with boxing that one can do this. One uses their own wits and ability to prove that they are the best at what they do, whether it is to use their fists and fight, rather than using a bat, ball, racquet, or even a club.
             Boxing is a superb character builder. It teaches the fighters to look after themselves both mentally and physically. A boxer is taught to eat properly and drink moderately.
