Before a car is manufactured for retail it is usually in the form of a concept car. A concept car is basically a prototype of the car later to be produced. Concept cars usually consist of features that will not be included in the manufactured car. Basically all automobile companies at one point or another produce a concept car. Automobile Producers use concept cars for a number of reasons, one is to test it out to see how safe it is or how it performs. Another might be to display it at car shows and see the public's reaction to their idea. Also they like to experiment with new ideas, for example: a high powered jet fan to blow off rain instead of windshield wipers. Another thing that they have experimented with is cameras positioned on the door instead of rear view mirrors.
             An automobile company that has quite a few concept cars is Volvo. Volvo currently has five concept cars. Concept Lab Volvo is where all of the concept cars are engineered and tested. One of there concept cars is the SCC (Safety Concept Car). The SCC has extremely state of the art features designed for the driver's safety and security. On feature is using your personal finger print as your key. Another feature is inferred eye scan which by scanning your eyes adjusts the steering wheel, pedals, and seat to the safest possible position for your specific height. That just gives you an idea of how far they are taking there ideas over at the Volvo concept lab.
             Volkswagen also is working on some concept cars. The Three concept cars the currently have are the Microbus, the Beetle Dune, and the ACC. Although these concepts may not be as technologically advanced as Volvo's concepts, they do have some nice features. One feature includes a navigation system that allows you to do anything from seeing your engines current conditions too watching TV. Another feature, which is found on the Microbus, is internet access.
