What this means is that while businesses were able to produce goods at a rapid pace, the consumers didn't have the money to buy them because they were not making nearly enough in wages because labor was ignored throughout the decade. This surplus of goods caused businesses to load up on unsold goods and greatly hurt their earnings, leading to the plummeting of their stocks.
