In the song Imagine by John Lennon, there are many examples of existentialism. In explaining all of the aspects of existentialism, there are many examples that lie solely in the lines of the song, there is no hinting around the idea of existentialism, but simply stating the belief itself.
Every verse of the song is telling us to imagine that there is basically nothing besides ourselves in the world all as one. Everything in life just gets in our way of achieving lifelong happiness as well as peace. We create our own happiness or sorrow, everything else is just an obstacle in our way. This is the most existentialist way of thinking.
In the first verse of the song, it states to "imagine that there is no heaven, ...no hell below us, above us only sky, imagine all the people living for today..." This is simply agreeing with the main philosophies and ideas of existentialism. By imagining that there is no heaven or hell, he is saying that there is no higher power above us. In the third line, we should imagine all of the people living for today, this is saying that we just make choices for ourselves today, and not worry about what is going to happen to us in the future. This agrees with the philosophy of existentialism in that we create our own lives by a series of choices and consequences day to day.
Another specific example in the song is the second verse, "imagine there's no countries....nothing to kill or die for, no religion too, Imagine people living in peace." Again, this is another very existentialist way of thinking. The first line explains, to imagine there are no countries, this mea...
