Quixote, Sancho lived the simple life of a peasant who would remain tending to the lands and animals. He only lives to survive and would have never thought of going through countless journeys to win fame throughout the world. Nevertheless, Sancho receives an opportunity that Don Quixote gives before him. It is a chance for Sancho to attain the governorship of an island, merely by becoming Don Quixote's squire. Sancho tempted by the offer, willingly agrees to follow him along his adventures. Even though Sancho had lived his life without ever feeling greedy or eager for power, the initial affect that Don Quixote has upon him already symbolizes a beginning of "Quixotification". Sancho began his journey as squire hating the act of violence or fighting, not understanding the code of chivalry or how they acted, or even the ability to gain wealth and hold onto it. All this was due to the restricted life he lived through as a simpleton. He never understood Don Quixote's intentions in committing such grotesque acts of violence. However, through his development he began to realize that there was some purpose to it, and at times he surprisingly was willing enough to fight; such as the scene with the innkeeper. This is evidence that Sancho has changed by the influence of Don Quixote. His goal of gaining wealth was what kept him striving on the journey and is also the reason he was able to adapt to the chivalric lifestyle.
