Over the summer I read Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book had great insight to the time before the Civil War even though it mainly focused on the stories of 2 slaves, Tom and Eliza. After reading the book I realized that even though the times of slavery were hard, people like St. Clare made it easier for as many slaves as he could. In Uncle Tom's Cabin St. Clare was my favorite character because of his kind nature, soft heart, and ability to keep calm.
             Throughout the story St. Clare treated Tom with the utmost respect even though he owned him and he was his slave. St. Clare was a kind man to all his slaves, his daughter, his wife and anyone around him. He was against slavery but even though he still practiced it, he treated the slaves with compassion. St. Clare treated Tom as if he was a friend and took advice from him. He let Tom tell him to stop drinking whereas other slave owners would think that the slaves were trying to take over and cruelly punish them. St. Clare was honest and kind to Tom and it made him stand out among the other slave owners in the book. St. Clare's kind nature was what made him my favorite character in the book.
             St. Clare also was a man with a soft heart. He did not hide the man he was and was not afraid to show it. The only reason St. Clare bought Tom was not for his own personal use but because his daughter asked him to. St. Clare loves his daughter more then anything and would do what she wanted. St. Clare's soft heart molded his daughter into what she is and how she thinks. Just like her dad she is optomistic and does not see the slaves as different people. As Eva was dying, she asked her father to make arrangements for the slaves so they end up with good hearted people and to let Tom free. Soft hearted as he was he promised his daughter that he would. Unfortunetly St. Clare died before he could sign Tom's free papers or find other homes for the slaves. There is no...
